Can I run a Pool Pump on an Extension Cord?
(And why you need an electrician)
The short answer is no—pool pumps should not be operated on an extension cord.
While it may seem like a simple solution, extension cords can create safety hazards around water and may prevent your pool equipment from operating correctly. Most pool pumps are designed to be connected to a properly installed, GFCI-protected outlet located near the equipment.
Why Extension Cords Are a Problem
Pool pumps draw a significant amount of power, especially during startup. Many extension cords are not designed for continuous outdoor use with motor loads. This can lead to:
- Overheated cords
- Voltage drop
- Poor pump performance
- Premature motor failure
- Increased risk of electrical shock
Because pools combine electricity and water, even small electrical problems can become dangerous.
What Does Code Require?
Electrical codes generally require pool equipment to be supplied by properly installed wiring and GFCI protection. Depending on the type of pool and equipment, additional requirements such as bonding may also apply.A temporary extension cord is not considered a permanent wiring solution for pool equipment.
What If My Outlet Is Too Far Away?
If your existing outlet is not close enough to the pool pump, the safest solution is to have a dedicated outdoor receptacle installed in the proper location.
